Mass Messages

Mass Messages

This article will show you how to send mass messages through the Empower App. As a Director, you can send one-way text messages and emails to Volunteers, Organizers, and Directors in your organization. Mass messaging is a great way to inform your network of volunteers, prepare them to take action, and to quickly get the word out.

How to Set Up and Send a Mass Message
  1. In your Empower Web App, navigate to Calls to Action tab or Organization tab and click on the Mass Messages button. If you would like to send mass messages about a particular Call to Action, you can also go to the Calls to Action page and select Actions and then Send mass message. You can also get to the mass messages screen by selecting some filters on the All People page and then going to Bulk Actions then Send mass message to send mass messages to people with the currently selected filters. Note that mass message targeting does not take the checkbox selections on the All People page into account, so you must select all people with the selected filters to send mass messages from the All People page.
  2. You are now on the Send Mass Push Notification / Text / Email screen.
  3. First, use filters to specify who should receive the mass message. This will be prefilled for you if you navigated here from the Send mass message buttons on the All People page or the Calls to Action page. Mass messages can only be sent to Volunteers, Organizers, and Directors. Contacts will never receive mass messages, even if they match the filters you set here.

  1. Next, choose when to send the mass message. Messages for a specific time in the future will be scheduled and sent at the time you select. Filters will be applied at the time the messages are sent. If you want to send the same mass message multiple times, you can press the + button to add additional times when the same message will be sent.

  1. Next, you will have to choose the type of mass message that you send. You can select between just sending a notification on the Empower App, sending a notification on the Empower App and texting individuals who don’t receive push notification on the App, and sending emails.
    1. To send a notification on the Empower app:
      1. Check the Send notification box.
      2. If you already populated a message to go out with your Call to Action, you should see this message populated in the box. The Send mobile app push notifications box will automatically be checked if you set up an announcement message in your Call to Action.
    2. If you did not include a message to announce your Call to Action, you can add a message here to send out through the Empower App. Make sure you check the Send mobile app push notifications box. Then add a title and message that your volunteers will receive in their Empower app.

  1. To send mass emails:
    1. Check the Send emails box.
    2. You can add a subject line for the email by entering text in the Subject box.
    3. The mass email will come from the email account listed on your Edit Organization page (see article on Edit Organization Page)
    4. If the Current Call to Action filter is used to target mass messages based on a particular Call to Action, the body of the email will contain a preview of the Call to Action and a link to log the outreach. This will make it super easy for the Volunteer to complete and log the outreach. Otherwise, you will need to write the body of the email as well.

  1. You can use a combination of mass push notifications, text messages (for those who don’t receive push notifications), and emails - you don’t have to rely on one method of outreach.
  2. Click Send to send out your mass messages.
  3. In Sent Messages, you can see all the messages related to your organizing program that have been sent from your Empower App. This information can be extremely useful. If you had a particularly well attended event or a high response Call to Action, look at the outreach that you completed before that action.
  1. In Scheduled Messages, you can see all the messages you have scheduled that have not been sent yet. From there, you can also delete scheduled messages if you do not want to send them anymore.
Notes
You can also create and send a mass message when you are launching a new CTA. In the Automated Mass Messages section of the CTA, you can send a message when the CTA is launched, or you can send a reminder after the CTA is launched.

Mass Messages will allow you to communicate with the people in your organization. This can be a helpful coaching tool as you think about supporting your volunteers through success.
