Responding to Calls to Action

Empower is the place for you to stay connected with your organization and get the latest actions you can take to make change, such as reaching out to friends and family, canvassing, or actions you can take on your own. Here's how you can start taking actions with Empower.

Responding to Calls to Action

  1. Click on the Actions tab in the Empower Mobile App. This is where you can see all of your actions.

  1. Find the call to action and click the purple button in the middle of the Call to Action to engage with it. Depending on the type of action, this button may have a different name.

  1. You will see an informational page that provides additional context about the call to action. Read the information to make sure you understand the action you need to take, then click Next. You can revisit this information later.


  1. Next you may see a page that guides you through having a conversation with a new contact. Read the information, then click Next.  


Relational Calls to Action

Relational Calls to Action ask you to reach out to people you know, such as friends and family, or people that you've canvassed in the past. Research says talking to people you know is the most effective way to create change. This is called "Relational Organizing." This helps you leverage the power of your personal relationships to make change and to use a trusted messenger for your message - you!
  1. If you have not already added people that you know to your list of contacts, you will be prompted to build your list. You can either choose Add from contacts to add people from your phone's contact list (make sure you give Empower permissions to access your contact list) or Add manually to enter the contacts by hand. This information is to help you keep track of your contacts to make it easier to reach out to them - you can always use nicknames if you prefer. 


  1. When you are done adding contacts, press Save and Finish to continue with the action.

  1. Next you will see your list of contacts. You can either select one of the contacts, or add a new contact by clicking the Add Person button. 

  1. If you click on one of your contacts, you will be taken to their contact page. You can directly reach out to the contact. Reach out to each person the way you normally would.


  1. You will see the prompts from the call to action. You can record their responses to the Call to Action in the app.

  1. There is also a notes section for you to leave any other notes about the contact.

  1. Click Go to next person to submit the outreach and start reaching out to the next person on your list.


Personal Calls to Action

Personal Calls to Action ask you to take action on your own.
  1. You will see instructions to complete the call to action. Follow the instructions, answer any prompts, then press Finish.



Phone and Text Bank Calls to Action

Phone and Text Bank Calls to Action ask you to call or text a list of contacts that will be assigned to you. 
  1. You will see a list of people for you to call or text. Select one of the people to continue.

  1. Use the purple button to call or text the contact. Answer any prompt questions by tapping on the responses. You can also edit the contact if their information is incorrect, or review the action. If you are calling the contact in a Phone Bank Call to Action, you will also have the option to send them a follow up text with additional information. Read the instructions for the Call to Action to see if this is recommended.

Door-to-Door Canvassing Calls to Action

Door-to-Door Canvassing Calls to Action ask you to go door to door to reach out to a list of contacts. These contacts may be assigned to you, or you may need to request contacts that are nearby.
  1. If you do not already have contacts assigned to you, you will need to request some. Click Request People when you are in the area where you want to start canvassing. Empower uses your location to find contacts near you, so you will need to enable permissions for your location to continue.

  1. You can see your assigned contacts in either a List or a Map view. From the list view, select the contact to log outreach, or use the toggle to switch to the map view. 

  1. From the map view, tap on the pin you want to go to next, then either Get Directions to open your maps app to get directions to that address or Reach Out to log outreach.

  1. Tap the address or Open Map to open a maps app to get directions to the address if needed. Answer any prompt questions by tapping on the responses. You can also edit the contact if their information is incorrect, or review the action. You will also have the option to send them a follow up text with additional information. Read the instructions for the Call to Action to see if this is recommended.

  1. If possible, try to reach out to all of the contacts on your list. If not, when you are done canvassing you can press Finish & Reassign.
